The Ribbon is unequivocally the best piece of head gear in the game for everyone but your Knight and Ninja, and probably for them too. While it only offers a single point of Defense, other Classes don't get anything better anyway. The Ribbon's strength lies in the fact that it grants a resistance to all eight Elements. This means that Spells and Special Attacks will nearly always miss, and damage will be halved in addition to the reduction from missing in the first place. You will find three Ribbons, and they are best given to characters who are vulnerable to such attacks. Don't fail to give one to your healer. The big question is whether to give one to your Knight. It will be a hit to his Defense (which is his most important stat), but on the other hand he will get hit by half of all single-target Special Attacks against the party. Of course, between the Dragon Mail, Aegis Shield, and Protect Ring, he should be fairly well protected already. The choice is yours.

Ribbons are quite possibly the best Armor piece in the game. Statistically, they offer decent defense for a head slot item, no weight or magic penalty, and a very nice boost to magic defense. However, the true power of the Ribbon is that it grants resistance to all 8 Elements. Note that, unlike its use in other games, this offers no special protection from Status Ailments caused by enemy attacks (since they have no Element). All in all, this is a great piece of Armor to give to your mages, especially your white mage, who you will want to keep alive so he or she can heal everyone else. You can find more by killing Death Riders or Lamia Queens, both of which are plentiful in Pandaemonium. If you're really lucky, you might win one when fighting the Lamia Queen earlier in the game in Altair, which can make much of the game a lot less stressful.

Ribbons are excellent headgear, but unlike in some other FF games, they aren't unequivocally the best. Their resistances and Status immunities are fantastic against spellcasting foes, but Crystal Helms have better stats and should be used against enemies that don't use Elemental or Status attacks (such as the final boss). How many Ribbons you want to fight for in the World of Darkness is up to you—certainly your Sages should have them, but you can't bring them home, so don't waste resources going overboard.

As in previous Final Fantasy games, the Ribbon is a great piece of Armor that grants the wearer complete status immunity. You'll find a pair guarded by two Lunasaurs near the final save point in the Lunar Subterrane, and should probably give them to your mages. However, if you want to find more, track down some ToadLadies or Warlocks. The Ribbon is a very rare drop from either.

The Ribbon Ability is great (as you'd expect), but you probably can't actually get it. You'll need a Ribbon Item, obtained via the Chocobo World minigame on the PocketStation... which was never released in the US.
