The NINJA is a huge upgrade from the THIEF. They can use almost every Weapon in the game, and are the only Class that can use the Katana, third in power to the Xcalber and Masmune. They also get level 1–4 black magic, including FAST. Truth be told, FF1's NINJAS play more like later games' Dark Knights than actual Ninjas.

The Ninja is a huge upgrade from the Thief. They can use almost every Weapon in the game, and are the only Class that can use the Sasuke, third in power to the Excalibur and Masamune. They also get level 1–4 black magic, including both Steel and Haste. Truth be told, FF1's Ninjas are more like later games' Dark Knights than actual Ninjas.
These masters of stealth and shadow tend to throw pointy things whenever fighting starts.
If you've played FFIII, you might expect Edge, as a Ninja, to be a ridiculous powerhouse. Sadly, this is not the case. He does dual-wield Weapons, and can Throw Shuriken, but as front-line fighters go he is rather fragile. He especially lacks in the Magic Defense department, since he uses neither shields nor mage Armor. However, his offense is very nice, he can Steal (which is rarely useful but can be fun, and can be performed over and over on the same enemy in this game), and his Ninja magic gives him a number of useful abilities. Chief among these is Image, which is a self-Blink Spell that can keep Edge alive against nasty enemies. His elemental Spells are decent, but nothing special. (Note that, unlike other water attacks, Flood is Ice-elemental.)
