The Masamune is, hands down, the most powerful Weapon in the game. The Excalibur is actually slightly more likely to hit any enemy with a family or elemental weakness, but the Masamune does quite a bit more damage and sports 15 more Accuracy than any other Weapon. Best of all, anyone can use it! You may be tempted to give it to your White or Black Wizard, since they are so terrible in combat, but this is usually a waste. They're better off using spellcasting items. You don't want to give it to your Knight unless you have more than one, since the Excalibur is definitely worth using, and a Master is actually better off remaining barehanded. Both the Ninja and Red Wizard are good potential Masamune wielders. If you have neither, feel free to give it to another Wizard, but don't expect much out of it.

The fact that the Masamune is the best weapon in the game won't surprise Final Fantasy veterans, but the amount by which it outclasses even the Excalibur might. With a ridiculous 150 attack to that sword's 100, it's far better even against Monsters vulnerable to the Excalibur's many attributes. It even grants 2 evasion rather than most weapons' 1, which at this point in the game can help anyone using heavy Armor, and has no magic penalty. If you have a sword-using red mage or something, this is the weapon for you. Most ridiculous of all, it casts Haste 11 on the party when used as an item. Even a Character with low intelligence is likely to get a few extra attacks out of that.
Sprite
The Masamune has fallen from grace from its previous position as the ultimate Final Fantasy Weapon. It's the best Dark Blade in the game, but since you don't really need Mystic Knights this late in the game, that doesn't really matter. On the other hand, it's tied for the rank of second-best standard Weapon in the game, so it will still see use.

Edge's second ultimate Weapon, the Masamune is the last one you will likely come across. You'll have to venture into the crystal area of the Lunar Subterrane to find this sword and its guardian, Ogopogo. Aside from being quite powerful, the Masamune can cast Haste in combat, which is always useful.
