Learn how combat works in Final Fantasy VI, and a few pointers on how to maximize your potential.
The Aegis Shield is identical to the Opal Shield, except that it offers resistance to Poison instead of Lightning. Since both the Opal and Dragon Armors offer resistance to Lightning as well, this is a nice tradeoff. Your KNIGHT will be virtually immune to Poisoning and Petrifying gaze attacks, not to mention the BANE Spell.

The Aegis Shield is the best shield in the game, evasion-wise. It also resists the four status Elements, which is generally more useful than the Dragon Shield's Elemental resistances since front-line fighters tend to have plenty of HP to soak damage attacks. Combined with the Dragon Armor, you'll have the same resistance as you would have with a Ribbon. If you want a second Aegis Shield (perhaps for the extra evasion), Iron Giants rarely drop them, but it's much easier to find a Dragon Shield for a second front-line fighter.
