The Down Ladder Spell is a very useful utility Spell. It will take you deeper into a dungeon (which isn't that helpful on Earth) or take you closer to the exit in a tower. This Spell is more useful for a Wizard than a Cleric, since you'll likely do more tower exploration and the Surface Spell is a cheaper method of escape.

The way the ladder Spells work is a bit strange. They don't create ladders, but rather immediately teleport you to the next floor (the next lower floor, in the case of Down Ladder). The really strange part is that, due to a bug, whether the Spell works or not depends not on whether the destination square is open, but whether the square behind it (based on the direction you're facing) is. You can often get Down Ladder to work after a failure by simply rotating in place and trying again.

Now this is an impressive Spell. With just four copies of Ladder Down, you can find any monster in a dungeon. The trick to being efficient is casting the Spell on the same square as a dungeon ladder that heads up (except for the entry ladder). That way, when you climb down you'll be on top of a down ladder, which you can immediately descend to another up ladder and repeat the process. This only requires finding the down ladder on the first level to quickly get to any other level. Of course, you'll want at least as many copies of Ladder Up to get out alive.

Dor Acron

Dor Acron will take the party one level deeper in a dungeon, in the same spot on that level as they are in the current one. This Spell can be incredibly useful, though with 8 dungeon levels and a cost of 15 MP, you won't be able to simply go right to level 08 with one character using this Spell. It is better used strategically to avoid complex floors. Analyze dungeon maps to find good locations to Cast Dor Acron.

Note that the Cleric equivalent to this Spell, Rec Du, costs 25 MP rather than 15. Since the opposed Spells both cost 20 MP, it's best to let your Wizards take you to lower levels and have Clerics bring you back. Druids and Rangers should never use Rec Du, favoring Dor Acron instead.

Rec Du is equivalent to the Wizard Spell Dor Acron, except that it costs 10 more MP to Cast. If you have access to both, use Dor Acron instead. The opposed Spells (Sur Acron and Rec Su) both cost the same amount of MP, so save your Cleric's MP to Cast Rec Su while your Wizard uses Dor Acron.
