The World Map is divided into an 8x8 grid, each square of which has its own set of encounters. Terrain has no effect on what you encounter or the likelihood of being attacked. The grid aspect of the world means there are pockets of land where you will have encounters that don't typically belong in that area.

The World Map is divided into an 8x8 grid, each square of which has its own set of encounters. Despite what you may assume, terrain has no effect on what you encounter (or even the rate at which you are attacked). The grid aspect of the world means there are occasional pockets of land where you can fight encounters that don't really belong in a particular area. I've described the general area where each encounter table is found, but if you want a graphical representation, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Final Fantasy II's World Map is one of the most interesting in the whole series. While square maps in general make little logical sense (the way they scroll on all four sides would require a planet in the shape of a donut), this game really takes the cake. You can actually walk northwest for long enough that you arrive where you started! With the exception of a few islands, all the major land areas in the game are connected and can be walked to. You could theoretically walk to Mysidia at the beginning of the game (but good luck surviving).
Once you restore light to the Water Crystal, the flood covering the World Map will dissipate, revealing a world that dwarfs the Floating Continent. Fortunately you'll mostly be using vehicles to travel, but there are even encounters for airships in a few areas.

The World Map contains every other location in the game, and will undergo a dramatic change from Balance to Ruin during the game. There is no going back once the change is made.
