The Silver Armlet is the first significant Defense upgrade for your White or Black Mages or your Monk. You can find one locked in the Marsh Cave and save yourself 5,000 gil. Unless your party's second slot is filled by a Class with very low Armor, it is a good idea to give the Silver Armlet to your White Mage to lessen the chance that you will be left without a healer. Upgrade everyone who needs one to this Armor when you reach Melmond (and can afford to do so).

The Silver Cuirass is as good as the Mythril Armor, but you can buy it much earlier if you take a detour for Bafsk. It's even quite cheap! Don't pass up this Armor piece for your mages. You will find an extra one in the Snow Cavern, but it's cheap enough that there's no real reason to wait. As the first cuirass with a bonus to magic defense, it's worth using even for mages in the back row.
