The first Armlet you encounter is the Copper Armlet, sold in Elfheim. Objectively, 4 Defense for 1,000 gil on what acts as a body armor piece seems pretty bad. However, Armlets are pretty much the only armor Black and White Mages can wear. You want your Mages as well-protected as possible, but you can certainly put off this purchase for a while and buy something a little more immediately useful. You will also find one in the Marsh Cave.
