The Gold Hairpin is one of three late-game pieces of head armor that are useful to mages. With no evasion % penalty and a minimal magic penalty, it's some of the best head defense they can safely wear. As an added bonus, it adds 10 agility and resists Lightning. You'll find one equipped on Leila when she joins, and two more later in the game.
