Your base damage is a minimum of 4, so a Great Sword always ensures that you'll deal at least 16 damage per hit. 16 is an important number because enemies with less than 16 HP will run away, and will not return until they have regenerated back to that 16 HP. If you don't want to be constantly chasing down enemies, you'll want to reach the 16 damage threshold as soon as possible. This isn't a bad starting Weapon if you have the Agility to wield it.
