Fighters appear infrequently in the overworld, but they're one of only a few Creature types that drop useful Items, so hunt them down when you can. They are pretty tough, but each one drops between one and four Torches and possibly a Helm as well. With no way to buy Torches, you're going to be hunting down a lot of Fighters if you're a non-Magic-using character intending to delve any dungeons or towers.
