The Barbarian is an interesting choice for a front-line fighter, similar to the Ranger. Rangers can't use +4 weapons (or Gloves), but get better armour and a variety of spells. Both have some steal and disarm skill, making them useful in dungeons.

In a head-to-head comparison, Rangers win out over Barbarians. Their lack of armour makes them a liability on the front line. Late in the game they'll be fine, but their weapon advantage isn't that significant (especially considering the cost).
