Old Friends in Kohlingen

The Kohlingen Area

Figaro Castle emerges in a desert southeast of Kohlingen, just as in the World of Balance. The desert encounters here are the same as they were on the South Figaro side, which means the main threat is Sand Horses. The other Monsters in the area are all new.

Bogies are big dogs that appear only in the wastelands. They have powerful normal attacks and can perform the inexplicably named Oogyboog special for double damage. They have no weak points, no resistances, and are one of the more generic Monsters you'll ever fight. The other wasteland encounter is against two Deep Eyes and two Muuses. Deep Eyes are odd little Monsters that can inflict Psyche and often choose to run away. Fire works well on them. Muuses can use Pep Up which sacrifices the Muus to heal an ally. They may do this voluntarily, or in response to Magic. They can also Slow your Characters with Gunk. Their attacks aren't completely illogical, though, as they will attack rather than using Pep Up if they're the only Monster remaining.

The safest place to fight is on the plains, where you will only be attacked by a single Muus or a Harpiai. These large birds are vulnerable to Wind, and also use it against you in the form of Aero. They can also use Pearl Wind, another Lore you can teach Strago once he rejoins the party. Their regular attacks and Aero are both dangerous, but with only 1,418 HP they won't be hard to defeat. Harpiais are accompanied by Deep Eyes when encountered in forests, where you'll also find groups of six Deep Eyes and three Muuses.

Kohlingen

When you enter the Inn near the town entrance, you'll see a familiar face: Setzer. He will balk at joining, but Celes convinces him pretty easily. He'll show you the location of Darill's Tomb and tell you that you can find a new airship there. You finally have a full party (assuming you recruited Sabin in Tzen)! Don't forget to equip Setzer, including Relics and an Esper.

The townspeople here have a lot to say. A Narshe guard mentions that Narshe is full of Monsters. If you speak to him after recruiting Setzer, he talks about reviving the frozen Esper. The old man in the Northeastern House suggests that Locke is searching for a "fabled treasure" and that if you find that treasure, you'll find him. A young woman mentions a man who was saying "Thou" to everyone—sounds like Cyan. An old lady will inform you that a "real mean guy" is fighting at the Colosseum, looking for the Striker. Finally, one of the old men wandering near the Inn offers to unequip party members for you, though this shouldn't be necessary.

The shops in Kohlingen mostly sell goods you've seen, but you'll want to upgrade Edgar's and Setzer's equipment, so that's fine. The Armor Shop sells the full set of diamond gear, including the DiamondArmor. The Weapon Shop sells three different weapons for Setzer, two of which you've never seen before. The Dice deal highly random damage, typically in the low range. At this point the best possible damage is likely around 2,000, and that will come up even more rarely than it would with fair dice. His other new weapon, the Trump, is powerful and will randomly dispatch an enemy like the Assassin. Unfortunately, Darill's Tomb is filled with undead that will be healed by this effect. Setzer's old Darts may actually be the safest choice for the moment.
