WORMS are high HP foes that are highly resistant to magic but quite vulnerable to physical attacks. You cannot flee from them, but there's no real reason to anyway, especially given how much experience they're worth. You'll find even larger groups on the Air floor.

Sand Worms hit hard but are fairly easy to take down. However, they do have a Quake-like Special Attack that can kill the party in one shot. A Ribbon, NulMgc, or NulAll will protect against this attack, and it's not terribly accurate, but it's still dangerous.
These dry desert-dwellers detest water. Throw some on them and watch them squirm.

Sand Worms only appear in the vicinity of Palamecia desert, and then only after the Cyclone has appeared. Their attack is on par with similar foes, but they also have an Earthquake 10 attack that can hurt the whole party at once. They have plenty of HP but pitiful defense, so basic attacks are the way to go about bringing them down.
