Fight your way through the Castle of Ordeal to earn the TAIL that proves your courage.
There are three main routes to the Citadel of Trials. The simplest route is to land on the peninsula northwest of the Citadel and trek up and around to it. It's a long walk, but the enemies are in line with those you've been facing. You can save some walking by landing in the clearing between the two eastern deserts, but this puts you in the middle of some very tough encounters, and can be a difficult trek. Finally, you can sail the ship to the river mouth near the Citadel. This is by far the easiest route, though it does seem a bit cheap.
Once inside the Citadel, you will note that the first floor has no encounters. Not only that, but once you sit on the throne in the northwest tower to warp to the second floor, there's no going back. You need to get to the end of the Citadel in order to leave.
The second floor is a teleporter puzzle filled with nasty enemies. There is one Treasure on this floor, the Bolt2-casting Gauntlets in the northeast tower. They are guarded by Clay Golems, and if you want to avoid this fight you can find them in an unguarded chest on the third floor instead. To get through the teleporter puzzle, take the southern teleporter at the first two forks, the eastern teleporter at the third, and the southernmost (third) teleporter after the room with the Gauntlets. Do not follow the hallway back west and north.
The third floor is fairly straightforward, and filled with fantastic gear. You will work your way around the outside until you find the Rat's Tail next to another throne. Prepare for a fight with Dragon Zombies when approaching the throne, which will then teleport you back to the 1F throne. When you return to Bahamut with the Rat's Tail, your Classes will be upgraded!
