The Ruby Armlet is second only to the DiamondArmlet in terms of protection for your Black or White Mages (or armored Monk). The Black and White Robes have the same Defense value, but unless you're worried about item slots, Ruby Armlets are a better choice because they let anyone in the party get the Robes' effects. Keep in mind you can get one for free in the Citadel of Trials.

You haven't seen a new cuirass in a while when you reach the Tropical Island, but the Ruby Cuirass is a nice little upgrade, and it's extremely cheap. Equivalent to Golden Armor for 1/3 the price, it's worth heading to the Tropical Island just to buy these and a Demon Spear.
