The Mage's Staff is nothing to write home about statistically, although it's a decent upgrade from the Mythril Knife your Black Wizard is probably still using in terms of power. However, the ability to cast Fire2 at will is quite nice. Combined with Dia2 from the Light Axes also found in the Sunken Shrine, the Mage's Staff can rip apart groups of Undead with ease. It's quite good against a number of creature types such as Winter Wolves and Earth Medusas as well.

However, the ability to cast FIR2 at will is quite nice. Combined with HRM2 from the Light Axes also found in the Sunken Shrine, the Mage Staff can rip apart groups of Undead with ease. It's quite good against a number of creature types such as FrWOLVES and GrMEDUSAS as well.

The Mage's Staff is a fantastic weapon. It's powerful in combat, has a low magic penalty, and casts Thunder 5 for free when used as an item. The only real downside is that you won't gain any advancement when using it as an item, but oh well.
