Defense is a fantastic Weapon. It is only slightly more powerful than the Ice Sword, but no Weapon other than the Masmune has more Hit Rate, making it a perfect fit for a NINJA or RedWiz. As a nice added bonus, Defense casts RUSE when used as an item, granting a significant bonus to Evade.

The Defender is one of the best weapons in the game, especially since you get it shortly before recruiting Leon. The main advantage of this sword is its 8 evasion, putting it behind only two shields in that stat. Wielding the Defender with a shield can raise the evasion of even the most heavily-armored fighter, and it can even be used in the off hand as a sort of shield (though doing this will prevent your shield skill from rising, obviously). Because the Dragon Shield and Aegis Shield both have very nice resistances, you'll probably want to use them in the long run, but the Defender is a very effective weapon nonetheless. It's even powerful offensively when you first find it.
