Ayla doesn't equip Weapons, but her Fists do get upgraded as she levels. Every 24 levels, she gets a new Weapon, though the game doesn't bother to let you know what the difference is, or even that this is happening (until level 72). The first two Fist upgrades simply increase Ayla's critical hit rate. The Iron Fist continues this upgrade, and can cause the Chaos status ailment. The BronzeFist has a much lower critical rate, but deals 9,999 damage on a critical hit.
Ayla has no elemental Single Techs, so she's not very useful against Monsters that are vulnerable to magic. Still, she is a frighteningly powerful Physical attacker, and has excellent Physical defense as well. She's also quite useful during a certain point in the game where the party loses their gear, because she doesn't need a Weapon. She also doesn't gain much from Magic Tabs, though her healing abilities and some Combo Techs may use her magic score.
