Even if you're really swimming in Gold, there are better things to spend your money on than the +2 Chain Armour. For one thing, +2 Plate Armour isn't that much more expensive, and for another if you've reached Dawn and have over 6,000 Gold you probably have a Frigate and can just go get the Exotic Armours.

Chain is a bit pricey early on, but if you have the Strength to Wear it, it's worth it. You can find Chain Armour in chests if you want to save some money, though getting those chests with such bad Armour is quite the challenge.
