Cloud doesn't have to defeat Dark Nation during the fight with Rufus, but doing so is well worth it. Dark Nation won't drop a Guard Source if Rufus is defeated first. Dark Nation will start off by using Barrier on Rufus and then itself. Once this is done, it will put MBarrier on Rufus and itself in the same way. Between actions, it can use a significant basic attack or the Bolt Spell. Dark Nation is in the back row, so Spells are your best bet for taking it out quickly.
