You won't be hit with a lot of Lightning attacks during the game, but it is a staple attack spellelement for your party. Surprisingly enough, you'll encounter Lightning most commonly underwater. The most dangerous Lightning attacks are the breath weapons of Blue Ds and TIAMAT. Most Aquatic and river creatures are vulnerable to Lightning, and few non-boss monsters resist it. All in all, it's a pretty effective basic attack element in most cases.

Of the three basic elements, Lightning is generally the least useful. It's mostly useful against sea creatures, although it is also useful against Bomb-type enemies (but so is Fire). It's nonetheless worth leveling for the few enemies it does work well against, but it's not a high priority.
Thunder, the element of the Boltspells, is useful against many aquatic monsters as well as machines. As with Ice, relatively few normal monsters resist Thunder.
