Surprisingly enough, the Wh.MAGE's best starting Weapon is just as powerful as the Rapier that the actual fighting Classes use. It lacks the Rapier's Hit Rate bonus, however. Don't be fooled into thinking your Wh.MAGE won't suck in combat for the rest of the game, though—he will. But he can at least hold his weight at the beginning of the game.

The Mace is the second weapon in the staff line, but it's quite a bit different from its predecessor. A lot less accurate and not much more powerful, it also imposes a magic penalty of 20 on the wielder. Unless you want to keep your staff skill high for later weapons, it might be best to have magic users skip on this one.
