The Flame Lance is a solid upgrade over the Demon Spear, though you may want to keep that spear around to use against the oh-so-common Magic Beasts you fight so often. Don't worry about using this weapon against Fire-resistant Monsters—there is no negative effect for doing so. The Fire elemental attack does make the Flame Lance quite good against creatures such as Undead, though.
