Take the eastern bridge to find the save point, and use it because it's time for a boss fight. You can collect the Exit after the fight, since it's so out of the way. You may as well use it, since you will have at least one person, and two if Cecil is high enough level, who can cast Exit in your party for the rest of the game.
As for the fight with Dark Elf, you cannot win round 1, so don't waste any Items trying. You'll be healed up for round 2, and the magnetic field will be removed (assuming you brought the Twin Harp, at least), so re-arrange your party and gear to optimal forms.
The fight against Dark Elf is not terribly difficult. He will cast Wind and cause status ailments, but Tellah should be able to handle that while the rest of the party attacks. The Dark D. that he eventually turns into, on the other hand, is nasty. You can win easily by having Tellah cast Wind, but in a straight-up fight, its Dark Breath ability deals a lot of damage to the whole party and makes things difficult. As usual, Bersk is very powerful for this entire fight.
