GARGOYLES first appear in the Marsh Cave, where they are incredibly dangerous to lightly-armored Warriors. They have 4 attacks which each deal moderate damage. SLOW is a must to protect your mages.

In the NES version of the game, the Horned Devil's status attack was Poison-elemental, but because they cause no Status Ailment, this fact has no in-game effect. They still cause no Status Ailments in the Playstation version of the game.
Horned Devils are basically fiery versions of Gargoyles. They still get four attacks, though their Attack score is low enough that even mages won't take much damage from them. They have low HP but high Evasion and very high Defense, and cast Fire1 early in most fights. If left alive long enough, they will cast Fire2, so don't let large groups survive for too long. NulFire will help, and Silence can stop them cold, though it will often miss. Despite being red and casting Fire Spells, they are not Fire creatures, and are in fact resistant to Ice as well as Fire. Lightning Spells can deal some damage to Horned Devils, but their Magic Defense in general is quite high. You'll just have to duke it out with them, though buffs like Steel and Haste are not a bad idea.
