Don't let the diminutive size of the GATOR fool you—they get two very powerful attacks, and don't fall easily. You won't need a lot of level 3 black magic in Gurgu Volcano, so don't hesitate to soften these guys up with LIT2 if you run into them early in the game. BANE and LIT3 are even more effective. Fortunately you will see them only rarely in the South Rivers. Later, in the North Rivers, they are a bit more manageable, but still dangerous.

This is not the case—they get two very powerful attacks, and won't go down particularly easy. You won't need a lot of level 3 black magic in Mt. Gulg, so don't hesitate to soften these guys up with Bolt2 when you run into them.
