The Onion Knight is the only Job your characters will have available at the beginning of the game, and you should make sure to switch Jobs as soon as possible, because Onion Knights are extremely weak.
Though the Onion Knight's base stats are terrible for most of the game, starting at level 88 they begin to increase at an astounding rate. A level 99 Onion Knight has 99's in all five stats, making them (statistically) the most powerful class in the game. Of course, they need an Onion Sword to take advantage of that power.
The Onion gear is also of special note. Dropped only by rarely encountered dragons in the Crystal Tower, each piece is the best of its kind in the game, and only usable by an Onion Knight. A full set of Onion gear makes an Onion Knight practically invincible, though you'll still need to use other Jobs if you want to cast any magic.
