The Cross heals Curse, a nasty Status Ailment that lowers attack and defense. Unlike later games, it doesn't wear off after combat, either. On the upside, you won't run into Curse until much later in the game, and you can heal it with Esuna 2, so you probably won't need to carry a lot of Crosses around.
