Metal Slimes yield more experience than any other Monster in the game, but this is misleading. There's a 1/4 chance they'll run away every turn (or at battle start). The only ways to kill them in one shot are a critical hit (1/32 chance) or getting HURT to connect (1/16 chance). Otherwise, you'll need to keep attacking for 0–1 damage until you hit them 4 times, hoping they don't run. They usually will, so consider any Metal Slime kill to be a bonus, rather than a strategy.

On the other hand, if you are willing to risk running from everything else South of Hauksness at lower levels, Metal Slimes can be fun to hunt. Being higher level doesn't make them much easier to kill, so trying to get lucky can be profitable. Just be sure to bring some Wings.

Slimes are the most basic (and iconic!) Monster in Dragon Warrior, offering no real threat except to unarmed and unarmored heroes with poor statistics. They are an easy target to gain your first level or two on, along with their Red cousins.

Red Slimes are slightly more powerful versions of Slimes, with one more Hit Point and a higher Strength. They also drop an extra GOLD. This makes the Outer Tantegel area a good place to make money since they are chock full of Red Slimes.
