Scott gives you the Ring early in the game, and it basically serves to take up one of your valuable inventory spaces, like most Key Items. On the upside, it does actually do something—you need the Ring to use B and Select to bring up the world map. (One of the townsfolk in Gatrea will hint at this ability after you show Hilda the Ring.)
