The THIEF is a fun Class, but certainly not the best of the bunch. If not for the upgrade to NINJA, they would be the worst. They can't steal as a series veteran might expect, nor is their high Luck score useful for much other than running away. They can use mediocre gear, and their Hit Rate only increases at a moderate speed. There's really just not a whole lot to be said for the THIEF until they become a NINJA. At least they get some use out of the otherwise pointless family-related swords.
Great speed is good not only for dispatching foes, but also for stealing the hearts of the ladies.

The success rate of the Steal command is around 2% for every five levels or Job levels the Thief has. The target's level and other stats don't affect the success rate. You can steal from any enemy, but sadly Steal is not a terrible useful ability, as the vast majority of enemies just have Potions or Hi-Potions, and you can't steal anything really good except from dragons in the final dungeon (who have Elixirs). The only Weapons you can steal are arrows, and only one at a time at that. The most useful Items you can generally steal are spellcasting Items.
Thieves are useful if you like to run away, as their Flee ability is just an improved Run. They do get some nice, exclusive daggers a bit later in the game, as well as the long range Boomerang that lets them fight from the safety of the back row.
The one thing Thieves are really good for, however, is unlocking locked doors without a Magic Key. Not that Magic Keys are expensive, but they take up inventory space and sometimes you just can't be bothered to find more. The Thief has to be the visible character (press select to rotate) for this ability to function.
