The Cover Materia will make the equipped Character sometimes take physical hits in place of other Characters. This combines well with the Counter Attack Materia, and is also useful for filling the user's limit gauge. However, by the same token, other Characters will have a harder time doing these things. At level 5, the Character with the Cover Materia will take every attack that can be covered.

Multiple Cover Materia provide a maximum bonus of 255%, but be careful—if increased past this point, it will roll back to 0%.

However, you can only Cover adjacent allies, so optimally you'd want to give Cover to your middle Character (the second listed on the menu).
