Like the Dagger, the Mace is cheap but not very useful. You only need 30 Strength to hit the magic 16 damage threshold, so if you have a Strength-heavy stat breakdown that's low on Agility, this can be a viable weapon in the early game. Agility is important, though, so I wouldn't recommend trying this.
