Cloth Armour isn't very protective, but everyone starts with it and its better than nothing. Of course it's not that much better than nothing, so it may be worth everyone selling theirs and pooling your money to get your front line some real armour at the start of the game.

Aside from Exotic Armour, any type in the game that uses Wizard spells (with the exception of the Ranger) is limited to Cloth Armour.
