Notes Casts magic missile (range 2), sometimes drops a wand or staff
If you are a Wizard or Cleric, you'll want to fight lots of Wizards early in the game. They can drop Wands or Staves, and you'll need one or the other if you want to Cast any Spells.

Randomly spawning Wizards are rare, but have a lot of Hit Points and a nasty special attack. Magic Missile replaces a normal attack, can be performed at range, and deals damage as if the Wizard has 255 HP. That means 1 or 41 damage on world maps, or a whopping 201 or 241 damage in towns and castles. Ouch! The ones in towns are usually easier to kill, though, due to their lower hit point totals.

Notes Uses damage spell
Wizards appear rarely in the overworld, and are never aggressive elsewhere. They have a magic attack that can deal damage from afar, so close in and take them out quickly.
