Ability Able to cast general and wizard spells
Like Clerics, Wizards have Magic that is only useful in the (optional) dungeons and towers of the game. While Cleric Spells are based on exploration, Wizard Spells are more based on killing things. Magic Missile is a very nice Spell once you've gained a few Levels, and Kill will just kill anything without fail. The downside is that Wizard Spells are very expensive. Frankly, you'll be using Up Ladder and Down Ladder more than anything else. And Blink is more of a curiosity than a useful Spell.

If you got huge amounts of Experience and Gold for killing tough dungeon monsters, a Wizard would be extremely badass, but you don't. Your best bet in dungeons is to get in, get what you want, and get out quickly, and the Cleric is far superior in that regard. Wizards are mostly just expensive. That said, if you like having a lot of firepower, this is the Type for you.

Wizards are the least vital of the four basic Types in Ultima III. Sure, their exclusive Spells are powerful, but because of the MP system's mechanics, you won't be able to Cast them very often. Killing every monster in a battle is nice, but it will leave you unable to do much else for quite a while. There are too many battles for that to be a huge advantage.

Worst of all, the Wizard's gear selections are abysmal. The only safe option when they have no MP is to either sit back and Pass, or throw Daggers (which can get costly). Even with Exotic Arms and Armour, you don't want a Wizard anywhere near the front line.
