You'll start off in your Skin, which blocks an impressive 50% of attacks. OK, most of that is probably assumed to be your general martial skill, but still. 50% is nice, but more is better—upgrade your Armour at the first opportunity.

Skin is understandably the least protective Armour in the game, but it's free and always available. Everyone starts off with Cloth Armour, though, so there's really no reason to ever use this.
