Firion has completely average stats, allowing you to do whatever you want with him. By process of elimination, this often makes him your white mage, though he makes a perfectly good fighter (and even looks like a fighter from FF1) if you go that route. He also starts with your only shield, though if you want to have two fighters, don't hesitate to buy another.
