As a dragoon, series veterans may expect Ricard to use a polearm, but in fact he is very much an exclusive sword user. With 8 levels in the use of a sword and none in any other weapon, you should definitely keep it that way. Ricard also begins with decent shield skill, though probably not to the level of your main fighter. For this reason he might benefit from using some of your lighter armor, to keep his evasion % high.
