The Black and White Robes have the same Absorb value, and their extra abilities make them a good replacement for Gold Bracelets when you get them. Keep in mind you can get one for free in the Castle of Ordeal.

The Ruby Armlet is second only to the DiamondArmlet in terms of protection for your Black or White Mages (or armored Monk). The Black and White Robes have the same Defense value, but unless you're worried about item slots, Ruby Armlets are a better choice because they let anyone in the party get the Robes' effects. Keep in mind you can get one for free in the Citadel of Trials.
