The LUTE is given to you by Princess Sara when you speak to her after rescuing her from GARLAND, but has no use until the very end of the game in the Temple of Fiends Past. It's entirely possible to end up stuck in the Temple if you never speak to her, so don't forget!

The Lute is given to you by Princess Sarah after you rescue her from Garland, but has no use until the very end of the game in the Temple of Chaos Past. In the NES version, you could forget to get the Lute, and would have to go back to Castle Cornelia to get it once you got stuck. Oops!
