You wouldn't know it by the name, but the ProCape serves as a shield. It can be used by any classes other than the Bl.BELT/MASTER. The 8 Absorb is nothing to be scoffed at, and your healer should definitely be using one. You will find two of these in the game, the second in an out-of-the-way treasure room on the Fire floor of the Temple of Fiends Past.

The ProRing is statistically the best hand armor in the game, and grants a resistance to Death attacks to boot. You may want to equip all of your party members with ProRings, with the possible exception of someone (preferably with a Ribbon) wearing the Zeus Gauntlet. You will find three in dungeons, but these are all very late in the game. It may be better not to wait.

You wouldn't know it by the name, but the Protect Cloak serves as a shield usable by all classes other than Monks/Masters. The 8 Defense is very good, and your healers should definitely be using one. If you're trying to stick to NES armor rules, this may be the piece that has to go to make room for a non-equippable item that casts spells (such as a Healing Helm). You will find two of these in the game, the second in an out-of-the-way treasure room on the fire floor of the Temple of Chaos Past.
