The Shirt is a laughable piece of gear, decreasing damage to your Mages by one whole point! If you're really cheap, you can get by without spending the 10 gil on this armor. Just to add insult to injury, you will find not one but two treasure chests containing Shirts, one of which is guarded by some of the nastiest creatures in the Ice Cavern. It's almost like Square hates you.

Clothes are pretty useless no matter what. If you're worried about Leather Armor's penalties to your mages, Clothes aren't much better and you may as well just go unarmored. Upgrade (or remove) these as soon as possible.
