The White Robe has similar statistics to a Gold Bracelet, but your Wh.Wiz may be using the Opal Bracelet and its 10 extra Absorb, making this a questionable piece of armor to wear. You'll want to keep it regardless, because it casts INV2 when used as an item. Repeated use of the White Robe can make your party virtually immune to physical attacks, which is useful when using the Heal Staff and Heal Helmets to restore your HP.

The Black Robe is statistically equivalent to a Ruby Armlet, and can be worn only by Black Wizards. Black Wizards are unlikely to be using your DiamondArmlet, so if you're looking to follow NES armor carrying restrictions, it's a fine body piece to equip. If not, you may want to leave this one in your inventory, because it casts Ice2 when used as an item. While fewer monsters are vulnerable to Ice than the other elements, it is more damaging than Fire2 or Bolt2, making this a very valuable piece of armor. As an added bonus, it gives the Black Wizard resistances to Time and Ice magic, though by the time you get it your Black Wizard is likely using a Ribbon that gives those resistances and more.

The Black Robe is the black mage equivalent of the White Robe, though it's not quite as good. Sure, it provides an extra 5 defense, but so what? Your black mage should be safely in the back row. It grants a nice bonus to intelligence rather than spirit, but the real difference is in its resistances. While the White Robe prevents most non-damage spells, the Black Robe instead resists the four damage spell elements. This is useful in keeping your black mage alive, but they aren't protected from annoying attacks like Confusion and Stone.
