Intelligence has two major effects. The first is to determine the damage of the Magic Missile Spell. It can deal anywhere from next to no damage to your full Intelligence score in damage, much like Strength influences attacking with your Hands. This may seem to pale in comparison to simply attacking with a Weapon, but combined with the magic bonuses from Weapons like the Staff or Triangle, Magic Missiles can be quite potent.
More broadly, Intelligence influences the price of all purchased goods except ale and Spells. Food costs a base of 5 pence per 10 Food, which decreases by 1 penny for each 20 points of Intelligence (to a minimum of 1 penny per 10 Food at 80+ Intelligence). Armour and Vehicles are similar: Armour prices drop 2% from the base price for every 4 points of Intelligence, while Vehicle prices drop 2.5% from the base price for every 5 points of Intelligence. Note that the "base price" is higher than the listed maximum price, because those are based on the minimum Intelligence score of 10.
Weapons are slightly more complicated, for two reasons. First, 4 pence are added to the final price of any Weapon regardless of Intelligence, which tends to even out the cost of the cheaper Weapons. Second, each point of Intelligence decreases the price at a rate of approximately 2% for every 5 points gained.
The moral of the story is, if you intend to buy Weapons and Armour, Intelligence is an important Stat to increase. You'll have to at least buy a seafaring Vehicle and a Shuttle at some point, so it's worth the effort of raising Intelligence even if you Steal or get your gear from Quests or ponds.

Intelligence is supposed to determine your Magic Missile damage, but instead Wisdom does that. Intelligence, however, determines your Spell failure chance (which Wisdom was intended to). This makes this Stat pointless for Clerics, at least in this regard, and extremely important for Wizards.
