Bibles increase your Maximum Gold capacity for reasons I can't begin to explain. With all 20, you'll be able to carry a whopping 100,000 gold. You need to purchase at least 17 Bibles to complete the game (since you'll need 70,000 gold to buy the Ascent Boots).
