The Giant's Gloves are one of the best items in the game, not because they have great statistics (indeed, they are equivalent to Mythril Gloves), but because they cast Saber when used as an item. As a Black Wizard Spell, Saber is lacking because their offensive statistics are so pitiful to begin with, and you have few level 7 Spell slots, but when anyone can use the Spell, it is quite powerful. You can take apart just about any boss by repeatedly using the Giant's Gloves and getting a Haste Spell. Even if you choose not to stack multiple castings of Saber, it is quite an effective Spell. Frankly it is worth equipping these gloves (and thus following NES Armor slot rules) just to prevent them from making the game too easy.

Giant's Gloves are a nice item, but they're overshadowed by the Thief's Gloves. Both give the same 15 defense, but the Thief's Gloves have 14 less weight and give +10 agility, offering 24 more evasion. The Giant's Helm-Thief's Gloves combination is pretty effective, though when you get better helms later you might favor these gloves to get that strength bonus. Agility tends to be more important, though, as your mages can pick up the offensive slack at this stage of the game.

You can find the Zeus Gloves fairly early in the game if you're lucky, and they are a fantastic piece of Armor. Their Defense is as high as any glove you're liable to find, and they offer very nice bonuses to Strength and Vitality. The problem is that they offer no magical defense whatsoever. If you want to track them down, you'll need to fight Ogres or Stalemen.
